For Shwmae Su’mae Day 2020, we encouraged our Hungarian readers to give the Welsh language a go. Through a series of anecdotes, interesting facts, learning tips and phrase cards, we reassured them that the Welsh language belongs to us all.

The aim of the campaign was to ‘normalise’ the use of Welsh by newcomers including Hungarians - while recognising that many will have had little exposure to Welsh and its historical and cultural significance since moving to Wales. Many have not experienced a bilingual community before, or may have limited competence in English.

For these reasons, the project approached them through the medium of Hungarian to help them explore bilingualism in Wales, and to highlight the many benefits of giving Cymraeg a go.
