In May 2025, Cardiff became the meeting place for two cultures as the city played host to our annual Welsh-Hungarian Day – a community-led event marking the growing friendship between Hungary and Wales.

With around 200 attendees gathering at Lisvane Memorial Hall, the event featured live entertainment, craft stalls, food workshops, and family-friendly activities to mark Welsh-Hungarian Friendship Day (14 May) – an initiative we founded in 2022 to honour the deepening ties between the two nations.

Guests at this year’'s mini-festival enjoyed Hungarian and Welsh music, vivid traditional costumes, authentic Hungarian food including lángos and chimney cake, as well as folk dance workshops from both cultures.

Following a rousing performance by singer-songwriter Daf Jones from Anglesey, we welcomed to the stage Folktone Band, a UK-based ensemble of Hungarian musicians whose traditional instruments – including the beaten gardon and the ‘cimbalom’ – bring the sounds of the Carpathian Basin to life.

The event also featured a live Welsh folk dance performance by Newport-based group Gwerinwyr Gwent, and an interactive Hungarian ‘dance house’ led by professional dancers Fanni Magyar and Ádám Radics. Lastly, visitors could enjoy an astonishing folk dance performance by pupils from the Nefelejcs Hungarian School in Newport.

Alongside the performances, visitors could take part in a Goulash Masterclass by Ceredigion-based Best of Hungary and enjoy Hungarian dishes including stuffed cabbage and beef stew. Craft stalls, a children’s play zone and a Learn Welsh taster session from Menter Caerdydd completed the programme.

The event was supported by The National Lottery Community Fund and the Liszt Institute – Hungarian Cultural Centre London.
